Stable Release: SqlSpec 5.1
Choose the appropriate download from the table below:
| stable release | |
| SqlSpec 5.1 (for SQL 2008) | download |
| SqlSpec 5.1 (for SQL 2005) | download |
Why are there two official releases? One is compiled against SMO 2005, the other against SMO 2008. That way, you don't have to install the SQL Server 2008 client tools if you have are still using SQL Server 2005. If you have the 2005 client tools installed, you should choose the 2005 download. Otherwise choose the 2008 download.
The 2008 release can document any SQL Server 2000/2005/2008 database. The 2005 release can document any SQL Server 2000/2005 database.
Regarding all other DBMS, the two downloads are identical. So if all you are interested in is Oracle, DB2, Sybase, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Informix, etc, choose the 2008 download.

Resources
SqlSpec requires the .NET Framework to run. If you don't have it, you can get it here.
For documenting SQL Server databases, SqlSpec uses SMO. You can download SMO 2008 here if you need it. This is the client tool install that works with the 2008 builds above. If you don't care about documenting SQL Server databases, you don't need this.
